Froude Hofmann celebrate the Centenary of Engineering Science at Oxford University.

04-08-2008

Over the past 12 months Froude Hofmann has been proudly associated with the renowned institution of Oxford University’s Engineering Department’s celebration of 100 years of Engineering Science.  This association began when Professor Alistair Borthwick (Professor of Engineering Science) located our company during research into the life of William Froude; our founder.  William Froude, who was educated at Oriel College Oxford (1828) before working with Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1837) and subsequently invented the hydraulic dynamometer (1877). The Oxford Engineering Centenary Appeal is looking to establish six graduate studentships and a student support fund to enable engineering postgraduates to pursue their studies regardless of financial circumstances.
The Centenary celebration began with The Jenkin Lecture on 15th September 2007 presented by The Honourable Mr Justice Ramsey on ‘Law and Engineering: resolution of technology disputes’.
Guest of Honour and Patron of Centenary: Lord Jenkin of Roding, formally launched Oxford’s Centenary of Engineering Science, guests included three generations of the Jenkin family, sponsors, academics, students, alumni and staff.  A series of special lectures, running from September 2007 to June 2008, followed: covering everything from Robert Hooke to motion capture and engineering and sustainable development.

During this series a lecture on the life and achiements of William Froude – “A Sacred duty to doubt”, on Tuesday 30th Oct ’07 was fittingly sponsored by Froude Hofmann. This lecture was attended by several members of the Management and Executive team of Froude Hofmann – photograph below:

The culmination of the Centenary celebrations was a grand Garden Party on the 28th June 2008, held in the impressive surroundings of Keble College, Oxford. On this occasion Froude Hofmann were pleased to provide an exhibition of our heritage and modern day technology with a comprehensive display; including a 1914 original Hydraulic dynamometer, our Automatic Robot Driver installed and operating in a Mini Cooper S, and various company history and product information.

Froude Hofmann would like to thank Professor Darton and his team for the opportunity to be involved in such special occasions and enabling us to support this worthy initiative. This association allowed us to demonstrate our commitment to industry and to academia.
