Marine
Since 1877 when the first Hydraulic dynamometer was invented we have been providing low speed high capacity dynamometers to the marine propulsion industry. Now served by the LS ranges of dynamometers we are the only company to continuously develop both machines and control systems specifically for this market area. The range comprises machines available in unidirectional (LS), direct reversible versions (RLS) and double capacity (DLS) versions covering a duty range in excess of 100,000kW
All torque-transmitting components are assembled using the oil injection technique, eliminating stress raising keys, keyways and associated operating problems. This technique also assures that subsequent removal of components, even after many years of service, is simple, quick and non destructive.
The LS range incorporates a fabricated steel casing divided vertically. Each half casing contains half power absorption stator elements. All machines incorporate stator halves that are removable castings.
The bedplate is a robust fabrication designed to be clamped at any position on its perimeter and to protect all hydraulic pipe and electrical fittings/cabling from normal shipyard rigours.
Control of the power absorbed by the dynamometer is by the fast response characterised outlet valve mounted directly on the casing. For reversible dynamometers, logic within the control system pre-charges the non-working compartment to allow smooth transition from ahead, through zero load, to astern for direct reversing tests. For absolute control through zero the LS dynamometer may be fitted with an optional friction brake, controlled by the dynamometer control system. This electro-hydraulic control system makes the machine inherently suitable for automation and permits constant speed, constant torque as well as the conventional 'power law' modes of control.
All dynamometers in the LS range are fitted with couplings both ends and are suitable for connection to the prime mover at either end.
Comparison of the Froude LS dynamometers with any other conventional type of hydraulic dynamometer of a similar duty will clearly show why Froude are world leaders in the production and design of large dynamometers for testing piston, turbine and electric prime movers.
